US to Equip India with Javelin Missiles and Excalibur Projectiles for $92.8M
GUWAHATI: The United States has authorized the potential sale of Javelin missile systems, Excalibur projectiles, and related equipment to India, as confirmed by notifications from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) to Congress. The estimated total value of this defense package is $92.8 million.
On November 19, the DSCA stated that the proposed sale is consistent with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives, emphasizing the strategic partnership with India. It noted that these defense enhancements are designed to bolster India’s military readiness without disrupting the regional military balance.
The first component of the package, valued at $45.7 million, includes the Javelin FGM-148 missile on a fly-to-buy basis, along with 25 Lightweight Command Launch Units. This proposal also encompasses training systems, manuals, battery coolant units, spare parts, and lifecycle support. Furthermore, technical assistance from the Security Assistance Management Directorate and the Tactical Aviation and Ground Munitions Project Office will be provided.
Additional elements in the first package include system integration services, refurbishment support for Block 1 launch units, physical security inspections, tool kits, and logistics assistance. The DSCA emphasized that these provisions are aimed at ensuring the operational readiness and long-term maintenance capabilities of Indian forces.
The second component, estimated at $47.1 million, focuses on Excalibur tactical projectiles and associated equipment. India has requested up to 216 M982A1 Excalibur rounds, which will come with Portable Electronic Fire Control Systems featuring improved integration kits, as well as primers, propellant charges, and repair services.
Technical data and assistance from U.S. government personnel are also part of the support framework for the Excalibur package. The DSCA indicated that such inclusions are standard for foreign military sales, helping recipient countries integrate these advanced systems into their existing military infrastructure.
The agency expressed confidence that India would be able to incorporate this new equipment seamlessly. It also highlighted that the sale would enhance India’s ability to address both current and emerging threats, while strengthening its homeland defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia.
