Empowering Cooperatives: Minister Amit Shah Unveils NCDC’s Vision
Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah announced that the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has become a vital resource for empowering cooperatives and providing them with essential financial support. Speaking at the 92nd General Council meeting of the NCDC in New Delhi, he highlighted the importance of promoting a circular economy, particularly in the sugar and dairy sectors, which will directly benefit farmers. Mr. Shah also showcased NCDC’s pivotal role in launching India’s first cooperative taxi service, designed to significantly aid drivers. He mentioned that a new multi-state cooperative society has been registered, with ongoing efforts in driver enrollment and technological advancements.
The Minister reported that NCDC’s financial assistance to cooperatives has surged nearly fourfold in recent years, now exceeding 95 thousand crore rupees. He noted that, aided by NCDC, over a thousand Fish Farmers Producers Organizations (FFPOs) have been strengthened. Mr. Shah confirmed that NCDC plans to allocate 20 thousand crore rupees, focusing particularly on dairy, livestock, fisheries, and women-led cooperative societies.
In a recent statement, the Ministry of Cooperation indicated that NCDC has broadened its outreach by setting up a new regional office in Vijayawada, along with sub-offices across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. Furthermore, financial assistance is being provided to facilitate the purchase of trawlers for deep-sea fishing in Maharashtra and Gujarat, significantly boosting the Blue Economy and economically empowering the fishing community, particularly women.
