Revolutionizing Community Spaces: GVMC Council Meeting on November 21 to Unveil Exciting Smart Vending Zone Proposal!
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is set to hold its next council meeting on November 21, featuring an extensive 90-point agenda primarily focused on developmental initiatives across various wards. Among the key proposals, the GVMC plans to establish three dedicated smart vending zones at Old Jail Road, Yendada, and Beach Road. This initiative is a direct response to the recent Operation Life to Urban Green Spaces (LUNGS), during which numerous vendors were removed for encroaching on public walkways.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg conducted site inspections alongside Chief Engineer P.V.V. Satyanarayana Raju and Zonal Commissioners K. Kanaka Mahalakshmi and M. Mallayya Naidu to assess the proposed vending locations. “The GVMC aims to create 21 Smart Vending Zones throughout the city,” Garg stated. “In the first phase, we will develop three zones in Zones 2, 4, and 6 under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with contributions from beneficiaries.” This project seeks to enhance the quality of life for street vendors, bolster their economic stability, and introduce modern vending amenities.
The planned smart vending zones will feature portable containers equipped with fans, lighting, and essential facilities. Each zone will undergo complete electrification to support various appliances and include aesthetic lighting to enhance the ambiance. To further reduce environmental impact, the zones will utilize solar power, supplemented by CCTV surveillance for improved security.
Additionally, a Central Management System (CMS) will oversee sanitation, daily cleaning, security, and Wi-Fi connectivity within each vending zone. The infrastructure will also provide plumbing and drinking water supplies, washing basins, and designated seating areas for patrons to relax. Garg emphasized that these proposed facilities are designed to ensure convenience for both vendors and the community.
Architect Vamsi Krishna presented the models for the vending zones to Commissioner Garg, who then instructed Chief Engineer Raju to develop a comprehensive report detailing necessary infrastructure and to take prompt action.
The forthcoming council meeting is expected to be contentious, as opposition parties plan to address issues surrounding Operation LUNGS, the privatization of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, contractor disputes, TDR bonds, Urban Community Development, Town Planning, and Public Health matters. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led by district president KK Raju, is preparing a strategy for impactful discussions on these topics.
As Visakhapatnam navigates significant urban development and governance challenges, the outcomes of the upcoming council meeting will likely have substantial implications for the city’s growth and public services.
