Urgent: Assam Orders Expulsion of Five Villagers in Sonitpur Within 24 Hours
Five residents from Dhobokata village in Assam’s Sonitpur district have been ordered to leave the state within 24 hours after a Foreigners Tribunal identified them as non-citizens. This decision was made under a colonial-era law that empowers the state to expel suspected illegal immigrants.
On November 18, 2025, the District Magistrate’s office in Tezpur issued the expulsion orders against Hanufa, Amjad Ali, Mariyam Nessa, Fatema, and Monowara, all residents of Dhobokata village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Jamugurihat police station. The orders reference the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act of 1950, a law designed to address migration issues following the Partition of India.
The Foreigners Tribunal No. 2 in Sonitpur rendered its judgment on October 24, 2025, confirming each individual as a foreigner in separate rulings. These proceedings trace back nearly two decades to references made by the Superintendent of Police (Border) in Tezpur on March 20, 2006.
The expulsion orders assert that the declared foreigners’ “presence in India/Assam is detrimental to the interest of the general public and also for the internal security of the state.” They are required to exit through specific routes in Dhubri, Sribhumi, or South Salmara-Mankachar.
District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, who authorized the orders, cautioned that non-compliance would force the government to take “appropriate action” to remove them from Assam under the provisions of the aforementioned Act.
