Shai Hope Makes History with Unprecedented Achievement in ODI, Yet New Zealand Prevails
West Indies captain Shai Hope made history in the second ODI against New Zealand in Napier on Wednesday by becoming the first-ever batter to score centuries against all Test-playing nations. He achieved this milestone while scoring an impressive unbeaten century off just 67 balls, bringing his total ODI runs to over 6,000.
Hope’s century marked his first against New Zealand, completing his set of hundreds against every Test-playing country. He is now the second-fastest West Indies player to reach 6,000 ODI runs, trailing only Viv Richards. Reflecting on his performance, Hope stated, “I got 109. It was still not enough… I needed to get 120 or 130 for us to win. That’s how I look at it,” highlighting his focus on team success over personal achievements.
Despite Hope’s remarkable innings, New Zealand secured a five-wicket victory over the West Indies, taking a 2-0 lead in the series ahead of the final match on Saturday. This win represents New Zealand’s 11th consecutive series victory at home. The standout moment for New Zealand came from a significant century partnership between Devon Conway, who scored 90 runs off 84 balls, and Rachin Ravindra, who contributed 56 off 46 balls. Their partnership totaled 106 runs, a notable achievement as it was the first century opening partnership for New Zealand in 73 matches spanning five years.
Batting first, the West Indies posted a score of 247-9 after losing the toss. Hope, with his explosive century, faced difficulties as he found himself stranded on 90 for nearly three overs due to a lack of partners. Shamar Springer was dismissed on the first ball of the last over, leaving Hope off strike with the team at 235-9. However, after Jayden Seales managed to get a single, Hope struck the next delivery from Kyle Jamieson for a six to complete his century, hitting 13 fours and four sixes in total.
As for New Zealand, after Hope’s efforts, they reached 248-5 with three balls to spare, needing eight runs in the last over. Some help came their way when Jayden Seales allowed a boundary from a no ball.
The match began with a three-hour delay due to rain, and once New Zealand won the toss, it started in humid conditions where the ball was swinging significantly. Batters found it challenging to score as bowlers maintained a full length, effectively restricting runs.
