Sangai Run 2025: 1,500 Athletes Sprint Ahead of Manipur Festival Excitement!
The Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS), in partnership with the Department of Tourism of the Government of Manipur, launched the “Sangai Run-2025” today as a kickoff event for the upcoming Manipur Sangai Festival 2025. The event commenced at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal, with N. Ashok Kumar, IAS, Commissioner of Home and Finance, officiating the flag-off ceremony.
Approximately 1,500 athletes participated in the run, which offered three categories: a 5 km Fun Run, a 10 km Fitness Run, and a 25 km Open and Veteran competition. The occasion was graced by several senior officials, including Shailesh Kumar Chourasia, Commissioner of Power; Hungyo Worshang, Secretary of Tourism and IPR; Naorem Praveen Singh, Secretary of YAS; Lourembam Bikram, Director of Tourism; M. Pradip Singh, DIG; Dr. Mayengbam Veto Singh, Director of YAS; and L. Nabachandra Singh, Director of Fire Services.
Adding to the event’s prestige was a lineup of celebrated sportspersons from Manipur, such as Padma Shri awardee and Olympian N. Kunjarani Devi in weightlifting; Arjuna Awardee L. Sarita in boxing; Padma Shri O. Bembem in football; Olympian Ng. Sonia in weightlifting; Dhyan Chand Awardee L. Anita Chanu in weightlifting; and Arjuna Awardee and Hockey Olympian Chinglensana Kangujam.
Participants who completed the race were honored with certificates, and cash prizes and medals were awarded to the top finishers. Everyone who took part received medals as well. The Sangai Run aims to foster fitness, community spirit, and public engagement as the Manipur Sangai Festival makes its return this year after a two-year break.
