Trump Teases Potential Venezuela Talks, Military Action Uncertain
US President Donald Trump clarified on Monday that he has not dismissed the possibility of deploying American military forces in Venezuela. However, he also indicated a willingness to engage in diplomatic dialogue, expressing interest in hearing directly from Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro about proposals to prevent further military escalation in the region.
In the Oval Office, when asked whether he would rule out military deployment in Venezuela, Trump responded, “No, I don’t rule out that. I don’t rule out anything.” He mentioned he might “probably would talk” to Maduro. Shortly thereafter, Maduro expressed his openness to dialogue with the Trump administration.
The United States has initiated a campaign of military strikes against alleged drug trafficking boats off Venezuela’s coast, conducting 21 strikes and reportedly resulting in over 80 fatalities aboard these vessels. Maduro has accused the U.S. of using its military presence in the Caribbean to undermine his government.
In response to a question about whether Maduro could offer anything that might deter U.S. military actions, Trump sidestepped the inquiry while directly accusing him of causing harm to the U.S. “He’s done tremendous damage to our country. He has not been good to the United States, so we’ll see what happens,” Trump stated.
Trump also hinted at potential military action against neighboring countries. He expressed discontent regarding Mexico, questioning, “Would I want strikes in Mexico to stop drugs? OK with me, whatever we have to do to stop drugs.” Furthermore, he took aim at Colombia, stating, “Would I knock out those factories? I would be proud to do it personally. I didn’t say I’m doing it but I would be proud to do it.”
