Meghalaya’s New Japanese Language Program: Unlock Your Global Career Potential!
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated a six-month Japanese Language Training Programme on Wednesday, aimed at preparing local youth for job opportunities abroad, particularly in Japan. The program, organized by the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society under the Labour and Skill Development Department, was launched at the Mount View Building in Barik.
At the inauguration, Labour Minister Methodius Dkhar and ASEAN Group Co. Ltd Chairman and CEO Nishikwa Toshiaki attended, along with Japanese tutors and officials from the MSSDS. Sangma emphasized the state’s commitment to establishing a focused, long-term partnership with Japan across various sectors.
He noted the cultural and culinary similarities between Japan and Northeast India and highlighted Japan’s continuous involvement in India’s development efforts. The Chief Minister pointed out the growing collaboration between Meghalaya and Japan in the healthcare sector. Two years ago, only two nurses from Meghalaya were sent to Japan, a number that has since increased to 37, with more expected to follow.
Currently, these nurses possess N4-level language certification. The government aims to help them achieve N3 proficiency, which would enable them to secure higher salaries. Sangma stated that nurses working in Japan are sending home an average of Rs. 1 lakh each month, contributing approximately Rs. 5 crore annually in foreign exchange for Meghalaya.
He added that while earlier training programs required participants to travel to Bengaluru, students in this new initiative will receive their training right in Shillong. Sangma welcomed the Japanese tutors and assured them of the government’s full support for a comfortable stay in the state. He also encouraged the 86 registered trainees to make the most of this opportunity to enhance their skills and improve their employment prospects abroad.
