Valiant Vendors Stand Strong: Sunday Market Eviction in Bama Nagar Stalled with AITUC Support!

High tensions erupted at the Sunday market in Bama Nagar, Madurai, as vendors staged a protest against the Madurai Corporation’s decision to relocate their market. A heavy police presence was deployed to manage the situation following a resolution passed by the Corporation council on September 28, which mandated the vendors to move to a new site at Uchaparambumedu-Tirupalai EB Colony.

On the morning of the protest, vendors from various regions began arriving to prepare their stalls, only to be confronted by Corporation officials demanding their immediate evacuation. Tensions escalated rapidly as members of the AITUC, led by Nanda Singh, intervened, asserting that the vendors had not disrupted local residents and refused to leave their established location.

The vendors made it clear that any attempt to forcibly remove them would lead to road blockages. In response, officials attempted to maintain order by deploying road roller machines to block both ends of the road, hindering access to the market. While the officials maintained that they were adhering to the Corporation council’s directive, tensions boiled over as heated arguments ensued, with Singh pointing out the absurdity of treating them as criminals for simply selling vegetables.

As the day wore on, the standoff continued, with both sides deeply entrenched in their positions. However, by approximately 6:30 p.m., the officials retreated, allowing the police to lift the barricades and let the vendors continue their business. A senior Corporation official emphasized that the resolution to relocate the market had been passed unanimously, noting that the authority behind the directive was compromised due to recent resignations within the municipal leadership, including the Mayor and five zone chairpersons.

The official clarified that the vendors had been given ample notice regarding the move and could only remain at their current location if the resolution was officially revoked. In response to the unfolding events, the vendors pledged to present a petition to the Collector during grievance day on Monday, seeking to address their concerns directly.

The situation at the Bama Nagar market underscores the ongoing challenges faced by street vendors in urban spaces, where bureaucratic decisions often clash with livelihoods. As this story develops, local merchants remain steadfast in their claims for a fair resolution, emphasizing their role in the community’s economy.

This incident not only highlights the struggles of the vendors but also raises important questions about urban planning and community engagement in Madurai. The protest has garnered attention, resonating with other vendors who face similar predicaments across the region. As negotiations continue, it remains to be seen how the Corporation will address the needs of both the merchants and the residents in the days ahead.
