Tragedy Strikes: At Least Four Lives Lost as Two Migrant Boats Capsize Off Libya’s Coast, Warns Red Crescent
At least four people lost their lives when two boats filled with 95 irregular migrants capsized off the Libyan coastal city of Al Khums on Thursday, as reported by the Libyan Red Crescent on Saturday. The first boat, carrying 26 migrants from Bangladesh, saw four fatalities. The second vessel, which held 69 migrants, included two Egyptians and many Sudanese; however, their conditions remain unclear.
Al Khums is situated approximately 118 kilometers east of the capital, Tripoli. This tragic incident came just a day after the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that at least 42 migrants were missing and presumed dead following the sinking of a rubber boat near the Al Buri oilfield, an offshore facility located north-northwest of the Libyan coast.
Since the fall of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has increasingly become a major transit point for migrants escaping conflict and poverty in search of a better life in Europe across the Mediterranean Sea. The humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated by perilous sea crossings.
Images released by the Khums Red Crescent depicted volunteers attending to survivors and laying out recovered bodies in black plastic bags. Some rescued migrants were seen wrapped in thermal blankets. The rescue operation involved the participation of the Coast Guards and the Khums Port Security Agency. The organization stated that the bodies were turned over to the appropriate authorities in compliance with directives from the city’s public prosecution.
In mid-October, the bodies of 61 deceased migrants were discovered along the coast west of Tripoli. Earlier, in September, the IOM reported at least 50 fatalities after a vessel carrying 75 Sudanese refugees caught fire off Libya’s coast. These ongoing tragedies have drawn the attention of various international stakeholders.
Last week, at a U.N. meeting in Geneva, several countries, including Britain, Spain, Norway, and Sierra Leone, urged Libya to close its detention centers. Rights groups have raised serious concerns regarding the treatment of migrants and refugees within these facilities, alleging instances of torture, abuse, and even killings.
As the situation continues to unfold, the plight of vulnerable migrants remains a pressing issue, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian intervention and a more coordinated response from nations impacted by this ongoing crisis. The grim realities faced by these individuals serve as a stark reminder of the broader issues surrounding migration in the region.
