Concerns from the opposition arose immediately following the introduction of stringent amendments or the SIR in Bihar elections, where the opposition effectively faced defeat. For instance, in the Kurhani constituency of Muzaffarpur, where RJD was in power in 2020, the BJP won this time by a margin of just 616 votes, despite over 24,000 voters being excluded. Similarly, in the Sandesh constituency of Bhojpur, the JD(U) won by a mere 27 votes, while 25,682 voters were excluded under the SIR.
The report highlights that of the 91 constituencies where the political dynamics changed, the NDA secured 75 seats, while the Grand Alliance won 15 and others claimed one. It reflects a trend where most of the constituencies significantly impacted by voter exclusion leaned towards the NDA. Despite the NDA’s victories, the report indicates that the RJD is leading in the percentage of votes cast, with Lalu Prasad’s party receiving 23%, the BJP 20%, JD(U) 19.25%, and Congress capturing 8.71%.
It is important to note that prior to the Bihar elections, the Election Commission announced the SIR, aimed at removing the names of deceased or fraudulent voters. This decision ignited controversy, with the opposition alleging that numerous voters, particularly from marginalized and weaker sections, were unjustly excluded across many districts.
