The Congress party has raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of Bihar’s recent election results, alleging that extensive voter deletions were pivotal in allowing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to achieve a significant victory. The party contends that the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, intended for identifying illegal immigrants, was misapplied to remove legitimate voters.
Congress leaders assert that over 6.5 million names were purged from the electoral rolls, disproportionately affecting poor individuals, minorities, and socially marginalized groups. They argue that these deletions played a crucial role in the election’s outcome, with 128 of the 202 seats secured by the NDA reportedly experiencing the highest number of voter removals.
The Kerala unit of Congress produced an analysis indicating that the SIR process did not identify a single illegal immigrant but led to widespread disenfranchisement. The party described the situation as a “wholesale purge” of legitimate voters, claiming that this distorted the democratic process into what they characterize as a “rigged electoral exercise.”
Congress leaders warn that such actions could establish a precarious precedent, where future voter lists may be manipulated to benefit ruling parties.
In response, the NDA has categorically dismissed these allegations. Union Minister Chirag Paswan stated that the opposition is struggling to accept the electoral outcome. He emphasized that the NDA’s victory reflects genuine public support rather than electoral fraud.
This dispute has ignited a national dialogue about voter rights, transparency in the electoral roll revision process, and the overall health of democratic institutions in India.
