Legendary Actress Kamini Kaushal Passes Away at 98: Honoring Her Legacy
Kamini Kaushal, one of the pioneering female stars of Hindi cinema, has passed away at the age of 98 in her Mumbai home, as confirmed by a close family friend. Kaushal, who started her illustrious career with the classic film Neecha Nagar in 1946, continued acting until 2022, marking an impressive 76 years in the industry.
During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Kaushal was among the highest-paid actresses, known for her roles alongside legendary actors Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor. In the 1960s, she transitioned to character roles, showcasing her versatility. Her final screen appearance was in the 2022 film Laal Singh Chaddha, starring Aamir Khan, where she acted at the remarkable age of 95.
“She died at her Mumbai home late on Thursday night. She would have celebrated her 99th birthday in February,” stated Sajan Narain, a family friend, to PTI. Born Uma Kashyap on February 24, 1927, in Lahore, Kaushal was the youngest of two brothers and three sisters and earned a degree in English literature from Government College in Lahore.
Her film career began when family friend and filmmaker Chetan Anand cast her in Neecha Nagar, a film that went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes Film Festival in 1946, establishing her as a formidable talent in the industry. The news of her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes on social media, with the official X handle of the Producers Guild of India stating, “We pay tribute to the versatile and multifaceted Kamini Kaushal ji whose captivating performances have enthralled millions in a career spanning over seven decades. Condolences to the family.”
