Silchar police have intervened in an alleged baby trafficking case by arresting a suspected middleman tied to the unauthorized transfer of a newborn boy. The child was taken from his mother under misleading circumstances but has been rescued safely from a childless couple’s custody. The primary suspects in this case, the infant’s father and stepmother, remain at large. The individual arrested is Amir Hossain, known for his brokerage activities in Madhurband, Silchar, and suspected to have links to a broader child-selling network in the region.
The situation came to light following a complaint filed by the mother, Somirun Nessa, who hails from Ratabari in Sribhumi district. Somirun had been residing with the baby’s father, Gulzar Hossain Talukdar, who is also married to Roshna Begum, the child’s stepmother. After delivering her son at Silchar Medical College & Hospital on October 27 and being discharged on November 3, Somirun was approached by Gulzar, accompanied by Roshna and Amir, who claimed they would take her and the baby back to Ratabari. Trusting them, she agreed.
However, when they arrived at the Ramnagar ISBT in Silchar, Gulzar took the baby, promising to return soon, but failed to do so. Realizing she had been tricked, Somirun quickly reported the incident to the police. Authorities acted swiftly and apprehended Amir. During the investigation, officers located the baby at a childless couple’s home in Durganagar, Udarband, where the couple claimed they were deceived into believing Roshna was the biological mother and that she had willingly handed over the child. They denied any financial exchange, but police suspect deeper financial dealings and trafficking implications.
Amir appeared in court and has been remanded to judicial custody. Authorities have initiated a manhunt for Gulzar and Roshna, with additional arrests anticipated as investigations delve deeper into what appears to be an extensive child-trafficking operation.
