Security agencies are intensifying their investigation into a significant white-collar terror module linked to a recent blast in the Red Fort area of Delhi. In a pivotal development, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police have approached Interpol seeking a Red Corner Notice against Dr. Muzaffar Rather, who is the brother of Dr. Adil Ahmad Rather. Muzaffar, hailing from Qazigund in south Kashmir and associated with Al Falah University in Faridabad, came under scrutiny following the arrests of individuals connected to this case.
Initial interrogations revealed that Dr. Umar Nabi, Dr. Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie, and Muzaffar traveled to Turkey for approximately 20 days in 2021, raising red flags for investigators. Sources indicate that Muzaffar left India in August and is currently believed to be in Afghanistan. An official explained that while the J&K police are not authorized to directly request an Interpol Red Corner Notice, they can initiate the process for a central agency to follow up. “This case is still being investigated,” the official noted.
The J&K Police’s State Investigation Agency (SIA) is diligently examining the ‘white-collar’ terror module, which was originally uncovered in October during an investigation focused on Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) posters found in Nowgam, Srinagar. This inquiry has since unveiled a broader network potentially involving medical professionals. The three main suspects-Umar, Muzammil, and Muzaffar-are thought to have utilized the encrypted messaging platform Telegram to communicate with a handler located in Pakistan.
In a timely response, Turkey’s Directorate of Communications Centre for Countering Disinformation issued a statement on November 12, rigorously denying allegations that its soil was being used for radicalization linked to these terror operations. The statement characterized reports claiming Turkey’s involvement in terrorist activities in India as a “malicious disinformation campaign,” emphasizing that such assertions are unfounded and intended to tarnish bilateral relations.
The investigation is further complicated by the devastating blast that occurred on November 10, claiming 13 lives and injuring over 25 individuals. An explosives-laden Hyundai i20 car, driven by 28-year-old Dr. Umar Nabi, detonated near the Red Fort Metro Station, leading authorities to confirm his involvement through DNA evidence matching remains found at the scene. Umar, believed to be the most radicalized among the trio, was known to have parked the vehicle near the historic site for nearly three hours before the explosion.
In the aftermath, authorities have arrested eight individuals and detained numerous others as they piece together the network’s operations. The ongoing investigation underscores the evolving nature of security threats and the intricate connections among individuals exploiting their professional backgrounds to engage in terrorism.
