ZPM and MNF Set to Reveal Candidates: Join Us on November 12!
Aizawl, Nov 11: Mizoram’s ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the primary opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) are set to announce their candidates for the upcoming elections to the 25-member Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC), scheduled for December 3. The ZPM president, Lalliansawta, will reveal the nominees during an event at the party office at 11 am on Wednesday, according to party insiders.
MNF media cell secretary Lallenmawia Jongte confirmed that their party president, Zoramthanga, will announce their candidates on November 12. In remarks to the press, Congress spokesperson Lallianchhunga stated that their party will disclose its candidates following the results of the Dampa bypolls on November 14. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) media convener, Johny Lalthanpuia, mentioned that the party will finalize its candidate list in coordination with its central leadership in Delhi before making it public.
According to the schedule issued by the Mizoram State Election Commission on November 7, polling for the LADC elections will take place on December 3, with vote counting set for December 9. The deadline for filing nomination papers is November 14, and candidates may withdraw their names until November 17.
Final rolls released in September indicate that 56,873 voters, including 29,019 women, are eligible to participate in the LADC elections, which will utilize Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). In the previous LADC elections held on December 4, 2020, the MNF, then the ruling party, secured 20 out of 25 seats, with the BJP and Congress each winning one seat, alongside three independent candidates. The current council’s term will conclude on December 18.
