Key election details reveal that voting will occur on November 11. There are 122 constituencies-101 general and 21 reserved (19 for Scheduled Castes and 2 for Scheduled Tribes)—where 1,302 candidates are contesting, averaging about 11 candidates per constituency.
An analysis of candidates shows a significant gender disparity, with men representing 89.4% (1,165 candidates) and women only 10.4% (136 candidates), with one candidate identifying as third gender. Major political parties involved include the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which has 71 candidates, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 53, Janata Dal (United) at 44, and the Indian National Congress (INC) with 37. Furthermore, the Jan Suraj Party (JSP) is fielding 120 candidates, while 462 candidates are running as independents, underlining the participation of 109 political parties overall.
There is a notable concern regarding candidates with criminal backgrounds in Bihar, with 415 (32%) having criminal cases against them. Among these, 341 (26%) face serious charges, including 19 candidates with murder charges and 3 with rape allegations. Alarmingly, 60% of constituencies (73 out of 122) have three or more candidates facing criminal cases.
On the wealth front, there are 562 millionaire candidates (43% of the total), with the richest candidate, Ranakshil Pratap Singh from the VIP party, boasting assets exceeding ₹350 crores. The second richest, Bittish Kumar from RJD, has assets worth ₹250 crores.
Regarding educational qualifications, most candidates are educated, with 9 being illiterate, 117 educated, 154 having completed 10th grade, 291 completing 12th grade, 297 possessing a bachelor’s degree, 180 with master’s degrees, and 37 holding doctoral degrees.
The electoral contest is intensely competitive in regions like the Magadh area, where the highest number of candidates, 315, are contesting. The second phase includes 201 Muslim candidates, including 12 Muslim women. The oldest candidate is 88-year-old Bhagwan Mareya from the RJD. Prominent national figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, have actively campaigned in this phase.
The Election Commission of India is stressing the importance of strict compliance with the Model Code of Conduct and urging voters to assert their right to vote actively.
