Bengal Woman and Daughter in Critical Condition After Distressing Suicide Attempt
A 27-year-old woman in Hooghly district, West Bengal, reportedly attempted suicide alongside her minor daughter due to fears stemming from not receiving a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) enumeration form, her family disclosed on Sunday. The incident occurred at their home in Dhaniakhali on Saturday. Both mother and daughter are currently in critical condition in the ICU at SSKM Hospital, and police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to the woman’s father, she was overwhelmed with distress after finding that she had not received the SIR form while other family members had. “She was frightened because she had no documents and feared being deported. In a state of panic, she consumed poison with her daughter,” he explained after visiting them in Kolkata. The woman had been residing at her parental home for the last six years following a marital dispute and had shown signs of significant mental stress in recent days.
Asima Patra, a local MLA from the Trinamool Congress, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of inciting fear among citizens with misleading statements concerning the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and detention camps. “When BJP leaders discuss sending people to detention camps, it creates widespread panic in Bengal. A similar incident occurred in Dankuni just days ago,” said Patra, emphasizing that the BJP is endangering people’s lives.
In a separate statement, the Trinamool Congress shared images on social media of party leaders visiting the families of two individuals who allegedly died by suicide recently in Sainthia (Birbhum) and Bhangar (South 24 Parganas) amid similar fears. The party stated, “As acknowledged by the Home Minister, the BJP is engaged in a mission to ‘detect, delete, and deport.’ Bengalis are legitimate citizens of this country, having lived here for generations with pride. Today, these very sons and daughters of the soil are subjected to a humiliating test of citizenship in their homeland. The climate of fear, deliberately instigated by the BJP, is now claiming innocent lives.”
