Tripura SSA Teachers Demand Justice: Mass Protest Against Government Delay
Teachers associated with Tripura’s Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) have declared plans for a significant protest, accusing the state government of not enforcing a High Court ruling regarding their regularization and instead placing blame on the educators. Santu Das, president of the Tripura SSA Employees’ Association, made this announcement during a press conference at the Agartala Press Club.
Das recounted that in 2015, during the term of the previous Left Front government, SSA teachers filed a petition with the Tripura High Court seeking regularization of their employment. This action led to an indefinite hunger strike in 2017, where leaders from the current ruling party publicly supported the protesting teachers.
He highlighted that the BJP’s 2018 election manifesto had promised to regularize contractual employees. Following this commitment, the High Court, on February 23, 2021, ordered the state government to regularize SSA teachers. While 113 teachers were regularized, the remainder received only a basic salary along with a 3 percent annual increment.
In 2024, the teachers established the Tripura SSA Employees’ Association to unify their demands. The same year, the High Court ruled that teachers appointed before July 29, 2011, were not required to meet the eligibility criteria of the TET and D.El.Ed for regularization. However, the state government contested this ruling by submitting a Special Leave Petition to the Supreme Court.
Das announced that on November 12, 2025, the association intends to organize a large-scale rally and submit a formal request to the Director of Primary Education. All SSA teachers are encouraged to take part in this demonstration.
Furthermore, he noted that the association, with support from the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, will request the state government to withdraw the Special Leave Petition and adhere to the High Court’s directive. “If the Hon’ble Chief Minister invites us for a tripartite dialogue before November 12, we are willing to suspend the protest,” Das stated.
