Tribute to Ram Charan Bharali: Celebrated Nagara Naam Artist Dies at 80
Assam’s cultural community is in mourning following the death of Ram Charan Bharali, a respected Nagara Naam artist, who passed away late Thursday night at his home in Kumarikata, Nalbari. He was 80 years old. Bharali was an influential figure in Assam’s traditional devotional music, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to Nagara Naam, a collective spiritual singing style rooted in the Naam Dharma tradition. Throughout a prolific career lasting over six decades, he revitalized the art form, gaining admiration within cultural circles across the state.
Born on January 18, 1945, Bharali embarked on his artistic journey in 1958 with the Progoti Jatra Party. He later established his own troupe, the Deher Kalakuchi Yuwak Naam Party, in 1967. His deeply devotional and creatively interpreted compositions played a crucial role in making Nagara Naam popular among younger audiences. During the 1979 Assam Movement, Bharali’s works resonated deeply with the populace, intertwining themes of spirituality and resistance. He went on to produce over 100 audio cassettes and 30 video albums of Naam, which stands as a remarkable achievement in Assamese folk music.
Bharali’s legacy has been acknowledged through numerous awards, including the Mohan Baira Award in 2017, the Naam Shiromoni Award in 2022, the Dr. Ambedkar Kalashree Award in 2010, and the Nagara Surya title in 2002. The Government of Assam recognized his contributions by granting him an artist pension in 1998. In light of his passing, the All Assam Nagara Naam Association has requested that the state government posthumously honor him with the Asom Saurav or Asom Baibhav Award, the highest civilian accolades in the state.
Association secretary Nipon Dutta Kalita characterized Bharali as “a reformer who transformed Nagara Naam with devotion and creativity,” emphasizing that his passing signifies the end of an era in Assamese cultural life. Nalbari Deputy Commissioner Nibedan Das Patowary confirmed that Bharali’s last rites will be held with full state honors at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, featuring a gun salute and attendance from dignitaries, including Cabinet Minister Jayantamalla Baruah.
Patowary remarked, “His contributions to Assamese culture and to Nagara Naam will always be remembered.” The loss of Ram Charan Bharali leaves a significant void in Assam’s cultural realm. His melodies and deep devotion are expected to resonate within the state’s spiritual heritage for generations to come.
