Honoring Legacy: Manipur Governor Celebrates 150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla commemorated the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram on November 7 at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) in Imphal. The event, organized by the Department of Art and Culture, saw the participation of various MLAs, senior officials, and eminent guests.
During his speech, Governor Bhalla highlighted Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875, as more than just a song; he described it as “a powerful expression of love and reverence for the motherland.” He reflected on its pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle, inspiring a wave of nationalism across the nation. He emphasized that the song’s designation as the national song in 1950 by the Constituent Assembly was a well-deserved acknowledgment of its historic importance.
Bhalla pointed out that even 150 years later, the essence of Vande Mataram continues to unify Indians, transcending regional, linguistic, and religious divides. He called upon everyone to uphold its enduring message of unity, peace, and progress, urging them to embody its ideals in the quest to build a robust and prosperous nation.
In his address, the Governor acknowledged Manipur’s rich legacy of patriotism and sacrifice, stating that the courage and resilience of its people exemplify the very spirit of Vande Mataram. He praised the state’s historic heroes and modern achievers in various fields, declaring that Manipur continues to contribute to the nation’s pride.
The celebration featured mass singing and choreographic performances by students from Shri Shri Balmukunda Dev Music College, Government Dance College, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy. The performances received commendations from the Governor for beautifully encapsulating the patriotic fervor of the song.
In closing, Governor Bhalla praised the Department of Art and Culture for organizing the event with dignity and elegance. He encouraged citizens to regard Vande Mataram as “not just a song we sing, but a pledge we live by,” urging them to dedicate themselves to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, a developed, united, and inclusive Indian society.
