Enhanced India–Myanmar Border Security: Lt Gen Pendharkar’s Critical Review
General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Indian Army’s Spear Corps, Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, conducted a review of operational readiness along the India–Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. This visit underscores the army’s preparedness to address any security contingencies in the challenging high-altitude terrain of this remote region.
During his visit, Lt Gen Pendharkar observed a joint integrated exercise conducted by the Assam Rifles and the Army at Vijaynagar in the Changlang district. The exercise showcased various military capabilities, including defensive deployment, aerial insertion of Special Forces, and specialized heli-borne operations.
The GoC received briefings on the current security environment, technological advancements in surveillance, and initiatives aimed at enhancing combat effectiveness in this strategically important area, as detailed in a Defence communiqué. The exercise specifically aimed to validate immediate response mechanisms to emerging threats along the border.
In addition to the military observations, Lt Gen Pendharkar engaged with Gorkha ex-servicemen and members of the indigenous Lisu community. He expressed appreciation for the former’s service to the nation and acknowledged the crucial role that local populations play in supporting national security and maintaining border stability.
Vijaynagar, surrounded by Myanmar on three sides, stands as India’s easternmost inhabited region. Despite its picturesque landscape, the area is notably remote and holds significant strategic value, owing to its historical settlements and proximity to the international border.
