Strengthening Ties: India and US Discuss Trade and Technology Cooperation
India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, met with US Senator Steve Daines on November 6 to discuss key issues related to bilateral trade and defense cooperation. They focused on current trade engagement, the signing of a new 10-year defense framework agreement, and potential collaboration in technology and innovation between India and the US.
In a statement released on Thursday, Kwatra expressed his gratitude to Daines, a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, for his continued support in enhancing the relationship between the two countries. He emphasized the importance of their dialogue, stating, “It was an honor to meet Senator Steve Daines. We had an enriching conversation on the current bilateral trade engagement and opportunities for collaboration. I appreciate his leadership in steering the priorities of our bilateral relationship in the Senate,” as noted in a post on X.
Earlier in the week, Kwatra also hosted Paul Kapur, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, at India House, where they discussed shared priorities and strategies for strengthening bilateral ties. In his post on X, Kwatra mentioned, “I was delighted to host Assistant Secretary Paul Kapur at India House. We had an engaging discussion on enhancing India-US bilateral relations.”
Kapur acknowledged the warm hospitality he received from Kwatra. The US State Department also shared his appreciation, stating, “Thank you, Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra, for graciously hosting me at India House last night. I valued the opportunity to discuss our shared bilateral and regional priorities, including the strengthening of the U.S.-India relationship.”
On a different note, the White House affirmed that President Donald Trump holds Prime Minister Narendra Modi in high regard and that the two leaders maintain frequent communication. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed this, saying, “The President feels strongly about the bilateral relationship and has great respect for Prime Minister Modi.”
Leavitt highlighted the recently held Diwali celebration at the White House and the appointment of Sergio Gor as the next US Ambassador to India as indicators of Trump’s commitment to the India-US relationship. She remarked, “The President recently spoke directly to Prime Minister Modi when he celebrated Diwali in the Oval Office with many high-ranking Indian American officials.”
During the special event on October 21, Trump praised Modi, calling him “a great person” and expressing his fondness for “the people of India.” The celebration included participation from Kwatra, Gor, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, along with prominent business leaders from the Indian diaspora.
Regarding trade discussions, Leavitt stressed that Trump and his team are engaged in “very serious discussions” with India. She added, “The President and his trade team continue to hold important discussions with India on this subject.”
