Unprecedented Alliance: Nine Leftist Parties Launch New Nepali Communist Party for 2026 Elections
In a significant political shift ahead of Nepal’s general elections, nine left-leaning parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist), have united to create the Nepali Communist Party. This merger was announced during a large rally at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu on Wednesday, prompted by rising public dissatisfaction surrounding corruption and political instability. The unification, solidified after weeks of discussions, follows mounting pressure from youth-led Gen Z protests that have recently emerged throughout the country.
These demonstrations, which call for transparency, accountability, and political reform, have acted as a catalyst for the fragmented left parties to seek unity. The movement is led by former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, commonly known as “Prachanda,” along with senior figures from the CPN (Unified Socialist). In preparation for the announcement, Prachanda’s party conducted a final convention meeting to approve the merger plan.
Addressing the crowd at the rally, senior leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha described the merger as “a historic step” toward consolidating Nepal’s left forces and promoting good governance, political stability, and economic development. “We are responding to the call for clean politics and development. The youth movement has reminded us of our unfinished responsibilities to the nation,” he stated.
The newly formed party will adhere to Marxism-Leninism and aims to practice what its leaders term “scientific socialism with Nepali characteristics.” The party’s central committee will now focus on crafting an interim constitution, a leadership framework, and a formal political declaration. Additionally, the new party has selected a five-pointed star as its election symbol.
This is not the first instance of left unification in Nepal. A similar merger in 2018 between the Maoists and the CPN-UML resulted in a powerful communist faction, although internal conflicts later led to its disintegration. The latest unification occurs amid renewed political turbulence following the ousting of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli after violent protests in September.
With former Chief Justice Sushila Karki currently serving as interim Prime Minister and elections scheduled for March 2026, the establishment of the Nepali Communist Party is anticipated to reshape the country’s political landscape once again.
