Chinese-founded fashion and e-commerce giant Shein has announced a worldwide ban on all sex-doll products following accusations from French authorities regarding the sale of dolls resembling children. French officials warned that the company could face a market ban in France if it does not comply with regulations surrounding the distribution of potentially pornographic materials.
France’s anti-fraud office, DGCCRF, highlighted that listings on Shein’s platform featured dolls that appeared “childlike” and likely intended for pornographic use. In response to these allegations, the Paris prosecutors’ office has launched investigations into Shein as well as other platforms like AliExpress, Temu, and Wish for distributing “messages that are violent, pornographic or improper” accessible to minors.
Acting swiftly after receiving the warning, Shein removed the controversial products from its site and initiated an internal review. The company later confirmed a complete ban on all sex-doll-type products and temporarily removed its adult products category for further scrutiny. A spokesperson for Shein stated that the ban applies globally. “These publications came from third-party vendors, but I take personal responsibility,” remarked Shein’s executive chairman, Donald Tang. He emphasized that “the fight against child exploitation is non-negotiable for Shein.”
France’s finance minister, Roland Lescure, spoke to BFMTV, asserting that the government could take legal steps to block Shein’s access to the French market if these violations recur. “These horrible items are illegal,” he stated, stressing the government’s commitment to robust action against the retailer.
According to the Associated Press, under French law, the distribution of child pornography can result in severe penalties, including up to seven years in prison and a fine of €100,000. The controversy comes just days ahead of Shein’s first physical store opening in Paris’s BHV Marais department store-a move that has already garnered backlash from activists and lawmakers, with some brands withdrawing their products from the store due to the scandal.
This incident adds to a series of legal challenges for Shein in France, where the company has faced three fines in 2025 alone for cookie law violations, false advertising, misleading information, and undisclosed plastic microfibres. Shein’s ongoing scrutiny reflects a broader concern over the e-commerce industry’s responsibility to protect vulnerable consumers and adhere to rigorous ethical standards.
As the investigation unfolds, the effects on Shein’s brand reputation and market presence remain to be seen. The company is working to realign its business practices in light of these serious allegations, vowing to uphold child protection measures as its top priority.
