Celebrating a Century: Mandaviya’s Vision for Indian Hockey’s Legacy
On November 7, 2025, India will celebrate a significant milestone: the 100th anniversary of Indian hockey. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, announced the centenary celebrations during a press conference on Monday. The festivities will take place at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, with simultaneous events planned in over 550 districts across the country.
This grand occasion pays tribute to India’s rich hockey legacy and honors the legends who have brought glory to the nation. These celebrations aim to inspire the next generation of players, emphasizing the sport’s integral role in shaping India’s identity and spirit.
The event will kick off at 8:30 AM with various activities designed to showcase India’s historic journey in hockey. “As India celebrates 100 years of hockey, we honor a century of pride, perseverance, and national glory. This milestone is a moment to remember our heroes and to find inspiration in their journeys as we look to the future. Hockey is more than a sport for India — it’s woven into our national identity. The celebrations across more than 550 districts will not only spotlight our legacy but also spread the story of Indian hockey to every corner of the country, encouraging young boys and girls to take up the sport with passion,” Mandaviya stated.
A highlight of the day will be a 30-minute exhibition match featuring the Sports Minister’s XI against Hockey India’s Mixed XI, comprised of both men and women. This match aims to demonstrate gender parity, teamwork, and inclusivity, showcasing top talent from the national teams.
The event will also honor hockey legends from various eras, recognizing their invaluable contributions to India’s status as a leading hockey nation, which boasts eight Olympic gold medals and 13 Olympic podium finishes.
Hockey continues to be a priority in the Indian government’s sports agenda. Both men’s and women’s teams are supported through major initiatives like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and the Target Asian Games Group (TAGG), which provide funding for training, competitions, exposure trips, allowances, and essential facilities throughout each Olympic cycle.
