Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani is maintaining a strong lead in opinion polls as New Yorkers prepare to vote in a highly anticipated mayoral election. The latest RealClearPolitics poll indicates that Mamdani is ahead with 45.8 percent of the vote, holding a 14.7-point advantage over independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who sits at 31.1 percent, and a 28.5-point lead over Republican Curtis Sliwa, who has 17.3 percent.
Conversely, an Atlas Intel survey released earlier this week also affirms Mamdani’s position, showing him with 43.9 percent support, while Cuomo trails closely at 39.4 percent. This reflects a tightening race, as Cuomo has gained ground, increasing his support by 5.4 percentage points since October 30. In contrast, Sliwa’s support has dropped significantly, contributing to a reduced gap between Mamdani and Cuomo.
In a remarkable pre-election development, over 735,000 early votes have already been cast, marking the highest turnout for early voting in a New York City mayoral election. This number surpasses the early in-person turnout from 2021, which was the first year to implement early voting.
If elected, the 34-year-old Mamdani could become the first Muslim mayor of New York City. As a state assembly member and Democratic Socialist of Indian descent, he is advocating for making the city more affordable. Mamdani has been leveraging social media and engaging directly with his supporters to maintain enthusiasm and encourage them to vote.
In a contentious twist, former President Donald Trump has weighed in on the election. In a recent interview with “60 Minutes,” Trump expressed that if Mamdani wins, it would complicate federal funding for New York. He referred to Mamdani as a communist and indicated he preferred Cuomo, stating, “I’m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other, but if it’s gonna be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’m gonna pick the bad Democrat all the time, to be honest with you.”
Cuomo responded to Trump’s comments by clarifying that the former president hadn’t officially endorsed him. He highlighted Trump’s threat to cut off funding and send the National Guard to New York if Mamdani wins, stating, “We need a mayor who can stand up to Donald Trump, who can get the funding New York deserves.”
Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels crime patrol group, is actively campaigning to disrupt both Democratic candidates’ chances. Known for his red beret, Sliwa has been canvassing vigorously across the city, promoting his message centered on public safety.
