Experience the Magic of Literature: Join Us at the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair Starting January 22!
The 49th International Kolkata Book Fair is set to kick off on January 22, 2026, as announced by the organizers on November 3, 2025. This year, the fair will highlight Argentina as its theme country, marking the South American nation’s first participation in the event’s history. The book fair will run until February 3, taking place at the Boimela Prangan in Karunamoyee, Salt Lake.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the fair, joined by a host of writers, artists, scholars, and poets. An official from the organizing committee noted that the International Kolkata Book Fair currently holds the title of the world’s largest attended non-trade book festival. In 2025, approximately 2.7 million book lovers visited, generating sales of around ₹23 crores.
During the launch event, organizers unveiled the logo representing Argentina as the focal theme country. They expressed optimism about the fair fostering stronger cultural ties between Argentina and India. Officials from the Argentine Embassy, including Mr. Andrés Sebastián Rojas and Mrs. Anandi Queipo Riavitz, graced the ceremony, highlighting the significance of this collaboration.
The upcoming fair will also feature participation from numerous countries, including Great Britain, the USA, Germany, Australia, France, Spain, Peru, Colombia, Japan, and Thailand. A variety of publications from Indian states, such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, among others, will also be on display, enriching the cultural tapestry of the fair.
Looking ahead, 2027 will mark a special milestone as the silver jubilee year of the Kolkata International Book Fair. In anticipation, the organizers have invited photographers to submit iconic archival photos taken during the fair’s early years, specifically from 1976 to 1996. Ten outstanding selections will be awarded, and these photographs will be showcased in the Press Corner of the 2026 fair. Additionally, they plan to include the chosen images in a special souvenir commemorating the 50th year of the fair.
The International Kolkata Book Fair promises to be a vibrant celebration of literature and culture, offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse range of publications and participate in various cultural exchanges.
