TAYPA Leads Powerful Torch Rally in Moran, Demands ST Status and Autonomy
A massive torch rally took place in Moran, located between the Dibrugarh and Charaideo districts, as members of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) and their supporters reignited their long-standing demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and autonomous governance. Organized by the Central Committee of TAYPA in collaboration with the Tai Ahom Mahila Parishad and local residents, the rally began at Ushapur Playground, traversing key routes in the town before concluding back at the starting point.
The atmosphere was charged with chants such as “Jaagega Ahom, Jaagega Hi” (Ahom Will Rise, It Surely Will), “No ST, No Rest,” “No ST, No Vote,” “We May Die but We Will Secure Tribal Status,” and “Down with BJP.” These slogans articulated the protestors’ urgent call for recognition and justice for the Tai Ahom community.
Leading the demonstration was the TAYPA faction of the Diganta Tamuli group, featuring prominent leaders including Green Bargohain, Ranjan Boruah, Abhijit Bargohain, Nipam Dihingia, and Rekha Gogoi. The protestors sent a clear message to the government, demanding the immediate constitutional recognition of the Tai Ahoms as a Scheduled Tribe and the establishment of autonomous governance to safeguard their cultural and political rights. They warned that ongoing neglect of their demands could have electoral consequences for the BJP in the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Participants from both the Moran Mahkuma Committee and the Moran Anchalik Committee of TAYPA joined the rally and expressed sharp criticism of the BJP-led government for its failure to address the long-standing aspirations of the Tai Ahom community. The event underscored the community’s determination to secure their rights and recognition, emphasizing the significance of their ongoing struggle.
