At least 48 Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested while attempting to illegally cross from India into Bangladesh through the Basirhat border pockets in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, authorities reported on Sunday. This incident follows the announcement of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, which has prompted concerns among migrants. According to a Border Security Force (BSF) officer, 33 individuals were apprehended on Sunday and transferred to the Swaroop Nagar police station, while an additional 15 were detained the previous night. These individuals, who had been working as maids and laborers in West Bengal and nearby states, were reportedly trying to return home out of fear of detention or deportation following the SIR announcement.
In a separate incident in Shimla, police have booked three government school teachers, including the headmaster, for the repeated assault of an eight-year-old Dalit boy. The father of the child, a first-grade student at the Government Primary School in Khaddapani, accused the headmaster Devendra and teachers Babu Ram and Kritika Thakur of physically abusing his son for nearly a year. The complaint detailed that the continuous beatings had caused significant harm, including bleeding from the child’s ear and damage to his eardrum. Allegedly, the teachers went so far as to place a scorpion in the child’s pants inside a school restroom. The father reported that the educators threatened the boy with arrest if he disclosed the abuse at home. On October 30, the headmaster supposedly threatened to expel the child from school, warning the family of dire consequences if they made the matter public, including explicit threats against their safety.
