Tezpur, Nov 2: The Brahmaputra River Sailing Expedition – MENU 2025, organized by the NCC Directorate North Eastern Region (NER), was officially launched on Saturday from Biswanath Ghat in the undivided Sonitpur District. This expedition is part of the Most Enterprising Naval Unit (MENU-2025) national competition for Naval NCC cadets, honoring the courage and leadership of Ahom General Bir Lachit Borphukan. The initiative aims to foster a spirit of adventure, teamwork, and nation-building among young people in the region.
Lt Col Madhab Chandra Boro, the administrative officer of the NCC’s 5th Battalion based at Darrang College in Tezpur, shared that 84 Senior Division and Senior Wing Naval NCC Cadets from the 48 and 49 Assam Naval Units are engaging in this venture. “The cadets will navigate 248 kilometers over ten days, passing through five districts of Assam, with the expedition concluding at Pandu Port in Guwahati on November 10. Each day, the team plans to cover an average distance of 20-25 kilometers, with the first stop at Silghat in Nagaon after approximately 30 kilometers,” he stated.
He further noted that the team is expected to reach Tezpur Jahaz Ghat by tomorrow afternoon.
The expedition leadership includes Lt Cdr Monoj Joshi, Commanding Officer of the 49 Assam Naval Unit NCC and Expedition Commander, with Lt Cdr Tileswar Nath, Commanding Officer of the 48 Assam Naval Unit NCC, serving as the Safety Officer. The fleet consists of four NCC whaler boats, an Inland Water Transport (IWT) vessel provided by the Government of Assam, and two rescue boats from the participating Naval NCC Units to ensure safety and communication throughout the journey.
Before embarking on this sailing phase, the cadets completed rigorous training during the Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC) organized by the 49 Assam Naval Unit NCC at Gohpur from October 22 to 31. This pre-sailing phase included extensive instruction in river sailing techniques, navigation skills, understanding river currents, and survival procedures to prepare all participants for the challenges presented by the Brahmaputra River.
The flag-off ceremony featured Promod Borthakur, MLA of Biswanath, as the chief guest. Among the attendees were Brig Karnail Singh, Group Commander of the NCC Group Headquarters in Jorhat, the District Commissioner of Biswanath, and other local dignitaries, all of whom wished the expedition success.
