Rohan Bopanna’s Inspiring Journey: A Heartfelt Farewell to Tennis
Indian tennis legend Rohan Bopanna, one of the few Grand Slam champions from India and a prominent figure on the ATP Tour for over 20 years, has officially announced his retirement from professional tennis. The 45-year-old’s last competitive appearance was at the Paris Masters this week, where he and Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik were eliminated in the opening round.
In a heartfelt message titled “A Goodbye… But Not The End,” Bopanna reflected on his career, which began in the coffee hills of Coorg and led him to the grandest stages of the sport. He mentioned, “From chopping blocks of wood in Coorg to strengthen my serve and running through coffee estates to build stamina, to finally standing under the lights of the biggest arenas in the world — it’s all been surreal.”
Bopanna, celebrated for his powerful serve and remarkable longevity in doubles tennis, is one of only four Indians to have ever won a Grand Slam title. His contributions extended beyond just titles; he represented India in multiple Olympic Games and Davis Cup campaigns, leaving a significant mark on Indian tennis.
His last Davis Cup match was against Morocco in Lucknow in 2023, and he concluded his national career after the Paris Olympics last year. With his retirement, Indian tennis bids farewell to a player known for his exceptional endurance, skill, and sportsmanship, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in the sport.
