183 Young Athletes Compete for Glory at 2nd WGH Taekwondo Championship
TURA, Oct 31: This year’s 2nd West Garo Hills Inter-Club Taekwondo Kyorugi Championship has attracted a remarkable 183 athletes, ages 7 to 17, from 12 Taekwondo clubs across West Garo Hills. This marks an increase from last year’s 164 participants. The competitors are divided into categories-Sub-Junior (7–11 years), Cadet (12–14 years), and Junior (15–17 years)—for both boys and girls, and will showcase their skills in various weight divisions, ranging from under 18 kg to under 59 kg. The bouts are overseen by 15 certified referees, including two officials from Shillong.
The two-day championship commenced on Friday at the Indoor Sports Hall in Tura, generating significant enthusiasm from participants and spectators alike. Organized by the West Garo Hills Taekwondo Association (WGHTA) in partnership with the District Sports Office in Tura and the Meghalaya Taekwondo Association (MTA), the event aims to provide an important competitive platform for emerging martial artists. The championship will conclude with the finals on Saturday.
Sanang G Momin, General Secretary of WGHTA, emphasized the championship’s role as a crucial selection event for the upcoming state-level championship in Shillong, where top performers will qualify for the National Games. He also noted that the Meghalaya Taekwondo Association is planning to bring in an experienced coach from Korea to guide state athletes as part of its long-term development strategy.
Momin remarked, “We are witnessing an encouraging rise in participation each year. More schools are including Taekwondo in their curriculum, which helps promote fitness, discipline, and self-defense among students.” Additionally, there are plans to host a memorial championship in honor of the late Eugene K Marak, who was instrumental in introducing Taekwondo to the Garo Hills region.
The opening day featured a series of intense Kyorugi bouts, where young fighters demonstrated their technical precision, agility, and determination, setting the tone for an exciting championship ahead.
