Victory for SNAP: Judge Orders Benefits to Continue Amid Shutdown, Defending Vulnerable Families!

A federal judge in Rhode Island has intervened to ensure that SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits remain available to millions of Americans amid the ongoing government shutdown. Judge Jack McConnell issued an oral ruling on Friday, ordering the Trump administration to utilize emergency funds to continue payments to the 42 million people who rely on these benefits. His decision came just a day before the administration planned to suspend the vital food assistance program.

“There is no doubt… that irreparable harm will begin to occur if it hasn’t already occurred in the terror it has caused some people about the availability of funding for food for their family,” McConnell stated during the ruling. This follow-up action complements an earlier ruling by Judge Indira Talwani in Boston, who also expressed concerns about the legality of the administration’s plans to halt SNAP benefits.

Lawyers representing the plaintiffs argued that the proposed cutoff was an arbitrary action causing a crisis for those dependent on food assistance. Meanwhile, a Justice Department attorney countered, asserting that SNAP was no longer operational due to a lack of appropriated funds amid the shutdown. “A shutdown is not an emergency,” noted Tyler Becker, underscoring that the administration had discretion to tap into $6 billion in contingency funds set aside by Congress.

In stark contrast, Judge McConnell instructed the administration to examine potential federal funds to sustain at least some SNAP benefits until Congress passes a new funding bill. His ruling granted a temporary restraining order requested by a coalition of cities, non-profits, and unions that filed the lawsuit against the administration.

Amid these developments, the Trump administration is expected to appeal this order. “Today’s ruling is a lifeline for millions of families, seniors, and veterans who depend on SNAP to put food on the table,” stated a representative from the coalition of plaintiffs. They emphasized that this victory underscores a critical principle: no administration should wield the threat of hunger as a political weapon.

The plaintiffs’ coalition is composed of various organizations, including charitable and faith-based groups, labor unions, and businesses. In a parallel development, Judge Talwani in Boston directed the administration to provide clarity by Monday on whether it would approve at least reduced SNAP benefits for November, emphasizing the need for a timeline regarding the use of contingency funds.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, commended both judges for their rulings. In a post on the social media platform X, he criticized the Trump administration’s actions, describing the decision to cut off SNAP as “vindictive and heartless.” Schumer noted that no president in American history has ever ceased SNAP benefits during a government shutdown, including Trump during his first term.

As the situation unfolds, the fate of SNAP benefits during the government shutdown remains uncertain, but advocates continue to fight for the sustenance of crucial food assistance programs that many Americans rely on for their well-being.
