Beware: How Deceitful Fraudsters Exploit Fake APK Files to Drain Your Bank Accounts!

Several residents in Hyderabad are falling prey to a new wave of cyber fraud involving malicious APK files circulated via WhatsApp and SMS links, resulting in unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts. In one alarming incident, a 29-year-old man from Domalguda installed an application named “pmkisan.apk,” mistakenly believing it was associated with a government initiative. Shortly after installation, he discovered that ₹1 lakh had been fraudulently debited from his account.

In another case, a 41-year-old Mangalhat resident received a WhatsApp message containing a link to download “RTO e-challan.apk.” Once he installed the app, his online banking credentials were compromised, leading to unauthorized transactions totaling ₹1.47 lakh. A third victim encountered a similar fate while searching for car rentals. He was directed to a fake website, where he paid ₹149 as a confirmation fee. This led to the automatic installation of a malicious app named “shriramcarrentals.apk” on his device, resulting in continuous debits amounting to ₹2.60 lakh.

Investigators indicate that these cases illustrate a disturbing trend, wherein fraudsters disguise harmful APK files as legitimate applications tied to government services, transport updates, or business transactions to steal sensitive banking credentials. The Cybercrime Unit has called for increased public awareness, urging citizens to refrain from downloading or installing APK files received through unverified sources such as WhatsApp, SMS, or social media platforms.

Officials warn that once these malicious apps are installed, they can remotely access the device, intercept messages and One-Time Passwords (OTPs), and facilitate money transfers without the victim’s consent. To combat this rising threat, police have issued essential safety guidelines. They advise against downloading APK files from unverified links, recommending the use of official app stores instead. Citizens should also avoid sharing banking information, OTPs, or passwords with unknown sources and refrain from granting screen-sharing permissions to strangers or unverified applications.

Keeping mobile phone security updated and utilizing trusted antivirus software are additional precautions that can help mitigate risks. In the event of cyber fraud, victims are encouraged to report incidents immediately by calling the national helpline at 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in. For urgent matters, the Hyderabad Cybercrime Police can also be reached via WhatsApp at 8712665171.

As this trend continues to escalate, community vigilance and education are more critical than ever. Cyber fraud represents a significant threat to individuals and their financial security, making it essential for residents to remain informed and cautious about the digital applications they choose to install. By adhering to safety protocols and remaining aware of the tactics used by fraudsters, citizens can better protect themselves against these malicious attacks.
