NHIDCL Safeguards Umngot River During Urgent Shillong-Dawki Roadwork
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has made a commitment to protect the Umngot River amid ongoing construction of the Shillong-Dawki Road, as reported by The Shillong Times. This assurance comes after concerns were raised by Shillong MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon in a petition to Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Bhupender Yadav, addressing potential environmental harm and pollution from the roadworks.
NHIDCL has indicated that the steep 100-meter hills adjacent to the river complicate the control of debris. To mitigate erosion and safeguard the river, they are utilizing bench-cutting techniques along with precautionary barriers and regular debris removal.
The geo-technical survey for the proposed 100-meter-high Dawki bridge has been completed, and its design has been approved by IIT Bombay. Construction will commence once all necessary approvals have been secured.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has assured a delegation from tourism societies in Darrang Elaka Dalloiship that the government will look into the pollution affecting the river and take appropriate measures. The delegation, led by Dalloi Pyrwa Lymba and supported by former Amlarem MLA Stephanson Mukhim, presented a memorandum advocating for the formation of a fact-finding committee and requesting a change in the daily road closure hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. due to inconveniences faced by tourists.
The representatives stressed the impact of the construction on tourism-related livelihoods and called for prompt government action to restore the river’s health while promoting responsible development.
