Assam Unveils Cashless Healthcare Revolution for Employees and Pensioners
The Assam government has introduced a cashless medical treatment facility for state employees, pensioners, and their dependents as part of its flagship initiative, the ‘Ayushman Asom Mukhya Mantri Lok Sevak Arogya Yojana (AA-MMLSAY).’ Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled this new service on October 29, allowing beneficiaries to access cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals throughout Assam and major corporate hospitals across the country. Until now, the scheme operated on a reimbursement model since its inception in 2023.
“Now, employees and pensioners can receive treatment without worrying about arranging funds. To ensure a smooth transition, the existing reimbursement system will continue in parallel,” said Chief Minister Sarma.
As of now, 223,826 employees and 6,172 pensioners have registered under the scheme. The government has reimbursed Rs 65 crore since the program’s launch, marking a significant increase compared to the previous annual expenditure of around Rs 17–18 crore. This demonstrates the scheme’s expanding reach and improved efficiency.
Sarma noted that, unlike the Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana, which is funded by the central government, the MMLSAY scheme is self-sustaining, funded through contributions from employees. He anticipates that 7 to 8 lakh beneficiaries could be covered in the upcoming years.
Additionally, the Chief Minister announced plans for the Assam government to establish its own Pay Commission, ensuring that state employees receive benefits on par with their central counterparts.
