Tragic Death of Village Chief: Assault Sparks Outrage in Manipur
A village chief in the Churachandpur district of Manipur was killed after a brutal attack by unidentified armed assailants, officials reported on October 28. The victim, M. Haokip, aged 50, was the head of T. Khonomphai village within the Henglep sub-division. He was attacked on Monday evening, suffering severe injuries as a result of the assault.
Authorities have indicated that the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), a group not bound by the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with both the central and state governments, is suspected to be involved in the attack. However, the motivation behind this violent act remains unclear at this time.
Villagers quickly transported Haokip to the Churachandpur District Hospital for medical attention, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries before reaching the facility.
In response to the incident, police filed a case at the Henglep police station and are currently conducting an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assault. Following the necessary formalities, Haokip’s body has been returned to the local community.
As a result of this incident, tensions have escalated in the area, prompting authorities to enhance security measures to avert any potential unrest.
