Guwahati, Oct 27: As Assam eagerly anticipates the release of its cherished icon Zubeen Garg’s final film, Roi Roi Benale, on October 31, local cinema hall owners have echoed the sentiment of the community, announcing that the film will run “until the entire state watches it.” Rajeev Bora, general secretary of the All Assam Cinema Hall Owners’ Association (AACHOA), stated, “Some people will be able to watch it on the first day, while others may only get to see it on November 15. We will keep it running, and many halls have already scheduled 4–5 shows daily.”
At a press conference on Monday, the association confirmed that Garg’s last cinematic venture would take precedence over two upcoming Bollywood releases. Bora noted that during Garg’s lifetime, audiences often watched his films multiple times. “Now that he is no more, people will probably watch it four times or even more,” he added.
However, the association urged the grieving public to maintain decorum in theatres and avoid creating disturbances during screenings. “There must be no violent situation, as Garg himself never supported such behavior. Offer love and, most importantly, follow discipline while watching the film,” Bora implored.
This announcement follows controversy surrounding a sharp increase in ticket prices, leading fans to voice complaints on social media and allege that theatre owners were capitalizing on public emotion. Bora clarified, “It is extremely unfortunate. I want to explain that local cinema halls have not raised prices. The hikes were implemented by multinational chains such as Cinepolis and PVR. We could have done it too, but we did not.” He characterized the price increase as a “commercial strategy with business interests” driven from “Delhi and Bombay.”
On Sunday, the Roi Roi Benale team addressed the concerns, stating they had informed multiplex operators of the price increase. Reports indicate that multiplexes have agreed to revert to regular prices, describing the spike as a standard “dynamic pricing” practice.
Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan, Roi Roi Benale is set to be released in theatres across 46 cities in India, including Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, and Dehradun. This film, marking Garg’s final appearance on the silver screen, has already generated over Rs 50 lakh in pre-release business, setting a new benchmark for the Assamese film industry.
