The Forest Department has installed a high-tech cage equipped with a camera and remote control mechanism to capture wild boars that have been wreaking havoc on agricultural fields near Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district. This innovative solution comes after numerous complaints from farmers about the destruction caused by these animals, which have increasingly invaded uncultivated lands adjacent to local forests.
Placed in Kothavadi just two days ago, the cage is designed to lure the wild boars using meat waste and other attractants. It features a collapsible, rectangular enclosure, measuring five feet in height, and operates with a sliding door that can be activated remotely from a distance of approximately 100 meters. The cage is monitored with a solar-powered camera, allowing Forest Department personnel to assess the presence of boars without needing to be physically present.
Efforts to control the wild boar population through culling with rifles had previously failed, prompting this shift toward a non-lethal trapping solution. According to Pollachi Forest Range Officer K. Gnanabalamurugan, the cage can hold between eight to ten wild boars at a time and weighs around 650 kg. Once captured, boars will be transported using a detachable transfer cage to uninhabited natural areas.
The area in question falls under the Pollachi forest range of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, highlighting the importance of balancing wildlife management with agricultural interests. Farmers in the vicinity hope that this approach will mitigate damage to their crops while allowing for the humane relocation of wild boars.
