Upcoming Announcement on Assam’s Electoral Rolls: What You Need to Know
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced on October 27 that the revision of electoral rolls in Assam will be announced separately. He stated that Phase 2 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will take place in 12 states and Union Territories, including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. The SIR will officially begin tomorrow in the following locations: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep.
Kumar explained Assam’s exclusion from this phase, noting that “Under India’s Citizenship Act, there are separate provisions for Assam. Under the supervision of the Supreme Court, the verification of citizenship is nearing completion. The 24th SIR order was applicable to the entire country, making it inapplicable to Assam. Therefore, separate orders for revision will be issued for Assam.”
He also mentioned that the voter list for states where the SIR will take place will be frozen at midnight tonight. Voters on this list will receive Unique Enumeration Forms from the Booth Level Officers (BLOs), which will contain essential details from the current voter list. Once these forms are distributed, individuals will be able to verify if their names appeared on the 2003 voter list. If they or their parents were listed, no additional documents will be necessary.
Furthermore, Kumar stated that voter lists from the SIR period of 2002 to 2004 will be available for public viewing on http://voters.eci.gov.in, allowing citizens to cross-check and verify their details online.
