Just before India’s crucial second semifinal against Australia in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, the team faced a significant setback as opener Pratika Rawal suffered an injury while fielding during a rain-interrupted match against Bangladesh at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
The injury raises concerns about Rawal’s participation in the semifinal clash on October 30. The rain had already disrupted the match, leaving India in a challenging position as they were poised at 57 for no loss, chasing a revised target of 126, when another downpour led the umpires to declare the match a no-result.
Rawal, who scored her first World Cup century in the previous game against New Zealand, slipped on the wet ground while attempting to field a shot by Sharmin Akhter off Deepti Sharma in the 21st over of the match. The game had already been shortened to 27 overs per side due to earlier rain delays.
Following the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reported that her knee and ankle injuries were being monitored closely by the medical team. Rawal reportedly twisted her right ankle during her attempt to prevent the ball from reaching the boundary, highlighting the dangers posed by the slippery conditions on the field, particularly in areas that had been consistently exposed to rain.
There were indications that the umpires may have overlooked some hazardous areas of the pitch during their inspections. As reports suggest, the decision to continue the match amid such dangerous conditions could lead to long-term ramifications for India’s campaign.
Pratika Rawal’s performance has been crucial for the Indian batting lineup, often partnering effectively with Smriti Mandhana. Together, they have amassed nearly 1500 runs for the opening wicket in One-Day Internationals this year. Rawal is also on track to become the second player ever to score 1000 runs in a calendar year in ODI cricket, following Mandhana.
Going into the semifinals against a formidable Australian side without Rawal would significantly diminish India’s chances for success.
