Tragic Death of 19-Year-Old in Itanagar: Allegations of Abuse Surface
A 19-year-old man, Gomchu Yekar, was discovered dead in his rented accommodation in Lekhi village, near Itanagar, on October 23. Police found his body around 11 am after a neighbor reported that his door was open and he did not respond to calls. Authorities have initiated an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita at the Nirjuli police station.
Yekar’s father, Tagom Yekar, has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against two senior government officials: Talo Potom, an IAS officer and former deputy commissioner, and Likwang Lowang, an executive engineer in the Rural Works Department, accusing them of abetting his son’s suicide. The complaint alleges that Yekar endured sustained harassment and coercion from both men.
In the suicide notes left behind, Yekar made serious allegations of sexual exploitation, manipulation, and threats. He claimed one of the officials recruited him to a position, leading to a situation where he felt he had “no way of living.” He further alleged that he had contracted HIV and was subsequently abandoned and blackmailed.
The notes detailed unfulfilled promises of financial assistance amounting to one crore rupees and threats that his life would be ruined if he revealed the alleged abuses. One particularly poignant note stated, “If I die, it will be because of him. Please give me justice.”
Hours after being implicated in the notes, engineer Likwang Lowang reportedly died by suicide. Inspector Talum Nekam, the officer in charge at the Nirjuli police station, confirmed the case’s registration and indicated that more details would be provided on October 24. The shocking revelations have raised significant concerns regarding the behavior of senior officials and issues of workplace exploitation in Arunachal Pradesh.
