YouTube TV is facing a potential blackout of Disney’s major networks, including ESPN and ABC, as the two parties negotiate a new distribution agreement set to expire on October 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Disney announced Thursday that it would begin informing YouTube TV subscribers about the looming possibility of losing access to these channels if a deal isn’t reached soon.
“This is the latest example of Google exploiting its position at the expense of their own customers,” a Disney spokesperson stated. They emphasized that YouTube TV subscribers would miss out on significant programming, including the NFL, college football, NBA, and NHL seasons, among others, if an agreement isn’t finalized.
Disney commenced its public announcements on YouTube TV at 5 p.m. ET. According to sources familiar with the discussions, YouTube TV is seeking better rates for Disney’s content, mirroring recent negotiations it underwent with NBCUniversal. With approximately 10 million subscribers, YouTube TV aims for more favorable terms based on its scale.
A YouTube TV spokesperson expressed, “We’ve been working in good faith to negotiate a deal with Disney that pays them fairly for their content on YouTube TV. Unfortunately, Disney is proposing costly economic terms that would raise prices on YouTube TV customers and reduce their choices, while benefiting Disney’s own live TV offerings like Hulu + Live TV and, soon, Fubo.” Should an agreement not be found, YouTube TV plans to remove Disney’s content and offer subscribers a $20 credit if this situation persists.
In a recent deal to prevent a blackout, YouTube TV and NBCUniversal reached a temporary extension before finalizing a more comprehensive agreement. Interestingly, Disney had previously established a distribution agreement with Charter, the largest U.S. pay TV provider, which allowed certain subscribers to access Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ at no additional cost. Sources indicate that Disney is prepared to offer YouTube TV similar terms.
Additionally, YouTube TV seeks to incorporate Disney’s streaming content, enabling subscribers to access Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ directly from its platform. This request was previously made during negotiations with NBCUniversal but was denied. Currently, Disney appears disinclined to accommodate this demand, according to insiders.
The ongoing negotiation process is further complicated by a recent conflict of interest, as YouTube hired Justin Connolly, a former executive from Disney’s distribution team, earlier this year. This move led Disney to file a breach of contract lawsuit, although Connolly has since recused himself from negotiations.
As both companies strive to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, the fate of beloved sports and entertainment content hangs in the balance for YouTube TV subscribers. The outcome of these discussions will not only impact viewership but could reshape the competitive landscape for streaming and live television.
