Who’s Right: Akhil or Himanta? Unpacking Zubeen’s Death and Political Votes
In a Facebook Live session today, Akhil Gogoi sharply criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the investigation into the mysterious death of singer Jubin Garg. In response, Sarma addressed Gogoi’s criticisms, defending his stance on the ongoing inquiry.
Sarma stated, “No amount of frenzy or agitation will disturb our stability. If anyone thinks that the government should acknowledge the outcry of these individuals, they are mistaken. As long as I am the Chief Minister of Assam, I will not be swayed by such frenzy.”
Gogoi has previously condemned Sarma’s remarks about the investigation into Garg’s death. In a Facebook post, he questioned how the demand for a proper inquiry into Jubin’s death could be labeled as “frenzy.”
He emphasized that neither he nor his supporters have incited any frenzy or attempted to impose their views on the public. Instead, he argued that the Chief Minister seems to have “lost his temper” in the face of reasonable demands for justice from the citizens.
According to Gogoi, Sarma’s recent behavior since Garg’s passing suggests that he may have something to conceal, is protecting the guilty, or is acting out of fear. “Following Jubin’s death, everyone has noted a change in your behavior; it’s as if you want to hide something, protect the guilty, and act out of fear,” he remarked.
Gogoi further pointed out that while the public has exhibited patience and restraint in seeking a proper investigation into the singer’s mysterious death, Sarma has labeled these demands as “frenzy.”
He charged that the Chief Minister’s comments aim to unsettle the public and that such remarks do not impact the people of Assam.
Gogoi added that Sarma’s argument implies that if demands for justice and punishment for the accused are considered “frenzy,” then such a ruler cannot be called a democratic leader. Instead, he should be compared to tyrants like Hitler.
