Northeast Frontier Railway Cancels Trains in Tripura: Urgent Update on Blockade
Agartala, October 23 (IANS) – The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) announced the cancellation, short-termination, or control of nine trains, including four express services, in Tripura on Thursday. This action was taken due to blockades set up by activists of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP)-affiliated Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS) at multiple railway points. TCS, led by TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma, organized a 24-hour shutdown across Tripura to press for an eight-point agenda, which notably includes demands for the deportation of illegal migrants.
According to NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the affected trains include the Sabroom (Tripura) – Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express, the Charlapalli (Hyderabad) – Agartala Express, and the Silchar – Agartala Express, among others. As a result of the abrupt scheduling changes, thousands of passengers found themselves in distressing circumstances.
Sharma reminded that the picketers have been obstructing railway tracks since Thursday morning, compelling the NFR to make these operational adjustments. A senior police officer reported that more than 52 significant locations and highways statewide witnessed sit-in demonstrations, with supporters waving national flags, and some blockades occurred along railway tracks in the West Tripura and Khowai districts.
The officer added that there have been no reports of disturbances throughout the state, and the situation is currently under control thanks to the presence of large contingents from security forces, including the Tripura State Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force.
The TCS called for this shutdown to emphasize its demands, which encompass the immediate enforcement of the Tiprasa Accord, the identification and deportation of all illegal immigrants, the establishment of detention camps in each district, the conduction of elections for Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and the introduction of the Inner Line Permit system to curb illegal infiltration.
Debbarma highlighted that other BJP-ruled states, such as Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi, have taken measures against illegal migrants, while the Tripura government has not yet acted on directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs. He criticized the BJP government for conducting elections in various urban and rural bodies while failing to hold elections for the Village Committees under the TTAADC.
