The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has accused the Meghalaya government of instigating conflict under the pretense of maintaining peace. This accusation follows the arrest of six youths connected to an improvised explosive device (IED) found at the Umsning market in Ri Bhoi district on October 12. The HNLC, a banned organization, labeled these arrests as state-sponsored harassment, asserting that the arrested individuals have no ties to their group. They argue that such actions aim to instill fear, distract from critical government issues, and suppress the Hynniewtrep community.
In addition, the HNLC condemned the re-arrest of individuals who had recently been released, describing it as an example of political opportunism and a lack of transparency. The organization claims that authorities are manipulating the police to control dissent and undermine local community spirit.
The HNLC further expressed long-standing grievances related to unresolved inter-state and international border disputes, which they believe continue to cause suffering and displacement for residents. They pointed to the Them Metor issue as a recurring example of government delays despite previous commitments and deadlines, indicating a significant lack of political will.
The organization has urged the government to cease the harassment of youth, end propaganda efforts, and refrain from using the notion of “peace” as a cover for political control. The HNLC warned that until these changes occur, they will continue to defend the rights and land of the Hynniewtrep people, refusing to be swayed by governmental promises of dialogue or reconciliation.
The group reiterated its dedication to protecting the dignity and interests of the Hynniewtrep nation, emphasizing that it will not compromise on its demands, regardless of government approval.
