Chaos on the High Seas: Gustavo Petro Ignites Outrage with ‘Get Rid of Trump’ Remark Amid US-Colombia Drug Boat Dispute
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has stirred up controversy with his recent statements regarding U.S. President Donald Trump. In an interview aired on Univision with journalist Daniel Coronell, Petro suggested that the international community might need to consider alternatives to Trump to foster better diplomatic relations. He stated, “Humanity has a first offramp, it is to choose to change Trump in various ways. The easiest way may be through Trump himself. If not — get rid of Trump,” as reported by The New York Post.
Following the backlash from these comments, Petro took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify his remarks. He emphasized that he did not intend to issue a threat against Trump. “I did not threaten Trump, I only said that Trump should change his heart, from defending death policies in the world like the genocide in Palestine, to life policies,” he explained. Petro further commented on the potential for change within the United States, saying, “If there is no such change, then the American people themselves will change Trump, because one cannot go toward general suicide.” He underscored the importance of democratic principles, asserting, “In the 21st century, some believe they can become kings and viceroys, but in republics, it is not possible. Here, the heads of kings are cut off if they come with a king’s attitude.”
Tensions between Petro and Trump intensified following a U.S. strike on September 15 that targeted an alleged drug boat within Colombian waters. Trump defended the operation, stating it was aimed at “confirmed narcoterrorists from Venezuela” operating in international waters. Petro, however, contended that the boat in question was Colombian and intended for fishing. He accused U.S. forces of violating Colombian sovereignty, asserting, “U.S. government officials have committed murder and violated our sovereignty in territorial waters. The Colombian boat was adrift and had its distress signal up due to an engine failure. We await explanations from the U.S. government,” he remarked on X.
In a sharp retort, Trump labeled Petro a “very unpopular leader, with a fresh mouth toward America,” and described him as “an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs.” This response underscores a growing rift in diplomatic relations between the two leaders, accentuated by differing perspectives not only on drug trafficking issues but also on broader foreign policy strategies.
The U.S. government has conducted at least seven known strikes against alleged drug boats in the region, primarily targeting vessels with connections to Venezuela. As the diplomatic dialogue evolves, both leaders will need to navigate the complexities of their countries’ relationships while addressing pressing global issues such as drug trafficking and sovereignty.
In this tumultuous climate, the interplay of statements and policies will be crucial as both nations seek to manage their interests and address underlying tensions that threaten their diplomatic relations moving forward.
