Rupaliparda’s Reel Review: The Hit-and-Miss of Parker’s Latest

Ah, darling, gather ‘round as we dive deep into the cinematic misadventure that is Parker’s latest album-a ride that feels less like an exhilarating rollercoaster and more like a tepid merry-go-round. Its high point may indeed crown Oblivion, but let’s not kid ourselves; it sinks faster than a floundering extra during a cutscene.

Imagine this: Parker’s falsetto hovers aimlessly over a limp dembow rhythm, barely able to muster the creative fire that DJ Python effortlessly ignites. He kicks off Not My World with an air of desperation, drifting through one of the year’s most forgettable beats before stumbling upon a shimmering bell-tone melody. Ladies and gentlemen, here’s the catch-is there any compelling reason to reach for this album amidst a sea of deep house producers who serve this style with panache?

Time and again, Parker finds himself lodged in the “meh” middle ground. He stretches for the euphoric heights of an R&S epic with the trancey eight-minute Ethereal Connection but never quite lands the moment. And as for End of Summer, the Balearic snoozer stifles any flicker of momentum like a wet blanket at a beach party.

Yet, the album is peppered with poignant misfires. Piece of Heaven presents as a half-hearted mashup of Enya-meets-Hollaback Girl, not delivering an ounce of the fun it promised. Meanwhile, See You On Monday (You’re Lost) bears the unmistakable scent of forgotten drafts, something we weren’t meant to hear. It’s a commendable effort from Parker, embracing new sounds, yet the craftsmanship that catapulted Tame Impala to artistic heights feels shockingly absent.

Instead of the sophisticated joy we’d expect-think snappy R&B beat switches or delightful flanger drops-we’re left with rudimentary drum machines thudding insipidly. It’s like watching someone fail to channel their powers in a superhero film; frustrating, yet you can’t look away.

Yet, amidst the chaotic cacophony, there lurks a whisper of what could have been. Imagine a sonic exploration of bad trips or the dark humor of adulthood-tantalizing hooks that morph into powerful, hypnotic rhythms, upending Parker’s spiral into self-doubt. Although tracks like Dracula deliver a catchy, cheesy boogie and Afterthought, the mildest of bummers on Currents, manages to rise slightly above the fray, the cumulative effect is wearying.

Ultimately, Parker seems wrapped in a nostalgia for past triumphs, having tread similar ground more successfully on The Slow Rush. Whereas that project’s brilliance hinted at lush possibilities, Deadbeat feels trapped in a superclub of empty beats echoing into the abyss-a masquerade too grand and sad to ignore. And while there’s a party in Parker’s head, darling, it’s a guest list of one; a spectacle that’s as melancholic as it is mesmerizing.
