Driver Injured in ULFA (I) Attack on Kakopathar Army Camp: Identity Revealed
Security forces have identified Bitul Baruah as the driver of the truck allegedly involved in the recent attack on the Army camp at Kakopathar. Baruah sustained bullet injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment under tight security. Investigations reveal that he purchased the truck, with registration number AS 25 EC 2359, from a dealer in Guwahati before the attack.
The truck was later found at Tengapani Ghat, situated along the Noa-Dihing River, close to the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. Security officials suspect that militants from the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) used this vehicle to carry out the assault on the Army facility on October 16.
According to police sources, the attackers approached the camp from the Doomdooma side, utilizing three Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGLs) and unleashing heavy gunfire for nearly 30 minutes, which caused widespread panic late that night.
Investigators are currently probing Baruah’s possible connections to ULFA (I) and his direct involvement in planning or supporting the attack. Although no formal charges have yet been made, intelligence agencies regard this as a significant security concern.
This incident has sparked renewed fears of an increase in ULFA (I) activities in Upper Assam, leading authorities to enhance counter-insurgency operations throughout the region.
